2nd Annual Mar Vista Green Garden Showcase!
The Mar Vista Community Council’s Green Committee celebrates Earth Day 2010 with the second annual Mar Vista Green Garden Showcase.
Fellow Los Angeles area residents and gardening friends are invited to participate in the community-wide open house tour of Mar Vista home gardens that takes place on Sunday, April 25th from 2 – 6pm.
Free self-guided walking and biking tours through over 60 private Mar Vista resident gardens will offer the public a firsthand look at a variety of sustainable, drought-resistant landscapes. As a model community for water wise best management practices, this Westside neighborhood has been at the forefront of Los Angeles’ most progressive water conservation measures which include hosting a Water Wise Use Expo and participating as the first neighborhood in the City’s Rainwater Harvesting Pilot Program.
Go to Mar Vista Green Garden Showcase for a preview of the gardens and a map of the locations to plan your own self guided tour. Choose a walking, biking or driving tour, or select the gardens that showcase solutions that you are considering. Look for the flags with the MVCC logo in front of each house the day of the tour.
The Mar Vista Green Garden Showcase seeks to empower Los Angelenos to adopt water saving solutions. The Mar Vista Community Council Green Committee organized this event to give Los Angeles area residents a head start towards a cost-effective, thoughtful and attractive way to do their part to conserve outdoor water use. California native plants, green patio decks, vegetable gardens, lawns transformed into drought-resistant landscaping and rain barrels from the Rainwater Harvesting Program, are just a few of the wide variety of sustainable approaches available for viewing on the tour. Organizations such as Surfrider’s West LA Chapter will have a table at the showcase and share information on their OceanFriendly Garden program.
“Last year, we were thrilled to have over 1,000 people attend our first showcase, and this year we’re ready for another large viewing! The turn-out is really a testament to how fascinating people find eco-friendly gardens, especially in a City where water is so scarce. This event provides anyone curious about how to make a positive environmental impact through smart gardening a personal look at green, innovative approaches and a like-minded community spirit that hopefully inspires them to make a difference too,” said Jeanne Kuntz, Mar Vista Green Committee Vice Chair and an organizer of the showcase.
Mar Vista can make a difference!
